What kind of training can I sign up for?
There are different programs offered by San Francisco CPR: basic training programs and renewal classes. However, not all of the programs available have renewal programs. The regular basic training programs are all certification programs while renewal classes allow students to revalidate near-expired certification (that has to be valid upon sign up).
All of these classes are offered at very flexible schedules; the more popular classes are even available during evenings and weekends. Program hours vary among different classes.

Programs vary in terms of target audiences, either the general public or health care providers and students. There are three major programs: BLS, ACLS, and PALS training.
Basic Life Support (BLS)
The Basic Life Support uses the 2010 BLS guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) as the focus of the program’s curriculum. There are four kinds of BLS programs offered at San Francisco CPR, tailored for different kinds of students.
- Heartsaver CPR/AED – This is a basic CPR class for the general public. It runs for four hours and does not require any prerequisites from trainees. Trainees can choose to get certified after completing the program – a skills test just needs to be passed.
- Heartsaver CPR/AED (C) – This is a basic CPR class targeted towards health care students and providers who need basic CPR certification. Once the program is completed, students need to pass a skills test and a written exam to get certification. This also runs for four hours.
- BLS for healthcare providers (C) – This program is a more in-depth CPR training program for health care providers who work directly with patients on a day-to-day basis. This program teaches the variations of providing CPR in a health care setting. The entire program runs longer, for 4.5 hours, and also requires students to pass a skills test and a written exam to get certified.
- BLS for healthcare providers (C) renewal – This program is a renewal class to keep the BLS for healthcare providers (C) completion card valid for another two hours. The program runs for 4 hours.
ACLS and PALS
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) teach trainees a team approach to providing CPR, focused on emergency situations in a hospital or clinical setting. The first program teaches students how to react to adult victims while the second teaches students how to react to pediatric victims. Pediatric victims include infants, toddlers, school age children, and younger teenagers. Only students with valid BLS for healthcare providers (C) completion cards are eligible for these programs.
- ACLS is a 16 hours program with a renewal class that runs from 5 to 6.5 hours.
- PALS is a 14 hour program with an update class that runs for either 6 hours and 20 minutes or 8 hours and 20 minutes, depending on the optional stations you choose to take.
